The Department was initially established in 2006 under the name of “Department of History” at the Faculty of Social Sciences, International Islamic University Islamabad. The Scheme of Studies of the Department is semesters’ based. Regular classes started in the Department in Fall Semester 2007 by launching BS (Four Years). Later on, MS leading to PhD in History and PhD in History programs also launched from the Department in Spring Semester 2008. MA (Two Years) in History Program started in Spring Semester 2010. In October 2010, the Department was renamed as the Department of History & Pakistan Studies and BS, MS and PhD Programs in Pakistan Studies were approved to be launched from the same Department.
International Islamic University Mission
The University’s mission of providing instruction, research, and dissemination of knowledge of the world to an international student body, the Department is committed to develop its capacity in all fields of History and Pakistan Studies. For this purpose, the Scheme of Studies of the Department is threefold focusing on Pakistan, Muslim World and rest of the World. As a whole, it covers evolution of human society in terms of historical, political, economic, scientific and technological developments happened in all eras and areas of the world. A graduate of the Department should be knowledgeable, research oriented, and skillful having a balanced analytical approach and world view. He should be keen to serve the humanity without any racial, regional or religious discrimination. It will make him a useful citizen not only of his native land but a source of positive social change within his global village.
The department of History aims to develop a three pronged research program in History. Its first priority is to maximize the research potential available at International Islamic University, which is strong in capacity for developing Muslim History. In addition, this area of research is neglected in historical studies in Pakistan and as such it allows a great scope for contribution. The second priority of the department is to develop research potential in the areas of Pakistan History such as the political, social, economic, cultural and local & regional history. The third area of research will be based on historiographical studies related either with historiography or philosophy of History.
With these aims and objectives, the Department hopes to play a significant role for the development and betterment of Pakistan and Muslim World in particular and the modern day’s global village in general.
